The No. 6 Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team, with star forward Madison Booker leading the charge and coach Vic Schaefer calling the shots, officially kicked off their season Wednesday evening at the Moody Center against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. It was the first real test for a squad looking to make some serious noise, and they’ve got some new faces ready to step up.
Fresh Talent Hits the Court for the Horns
This season opener was a massive moment for testing out some seriously fresh talent on the Longhorns’ roster. We’re talking about freshmen Addison Bjorn and Isi Etute, who are surely chomping at the bit to prove themselves. Plus, transfers Zya Vann and Jayda Clark are bringing their game to Austin, looking to make an immediate impact. And you know returning point guard Bryanna Preston is gonna be a crucial piece in making all this new blood gel. We even saw guard Lizzy Spaight getting after it, driving hard to the hoop in the first half of that opener. The coaches are clearly looking to see what this new group can do early.
Exhibition Gauntlet Set the Stage
This wasn’t exactly a cold open for the Longhorns, though. They’ve been through a rigorous series of challenging exhibition opponents over the past few weeks, really getting themselves battle-tested before the regular season even started. The Horns notched some solid wins against big names like UCLA and Baylor, showing they can hang with the best. The only real stumble in that warm-up stretch was a tough loss to UConn. You gotta wonder if those high-stakes exhibition matchups were just what Coach Schaefer needed to see exactly what he’s got in this squad before the games really start counting.
So, the season is officially underway for the No. 6 Texas Longhorns. With that first game against Fairleigh Dickinson in the books, all eyes are on how this mix of proven stars like Madison Booker and exciting new talent comes together after those challenging warm-up games. What’s next for this squad as they settle into the rhythm of the season? We’ll be watching every step of the way!
