St. Mary Catholic Central junior Christian Craanen secured his third straight All-State cross country finish this past Saturday, a monumental achievement made even tougher by a hip injury that plagued him at the Division 3 state finals. He flat out pushed through some serious pain to make it happen, hitting 27th place.

Running on Grit: Craanen’s Injury Battle

Last year, Craanen was on fire, finishing third in the state. He wanted to climb that ladder even higher this season, but his body had other plans. That nagging hip injury he picked up over the summer flared up again just weeks ago, leaving him anything but healthy for the big race at Michigan International Speedway. SMCC coach Nick Eby didn’t sugarcoat it, saying, “It’s tough running when every step hurts.” Think about that for a second. Every. Single. Step. Eby added, “It takes a lot of mental toughness to keep pushing.” And push, Craanen did. He crossed the finish line in 16:14, earning that All-State status he set as his goal. Seriously, that’s pure grit right there.

Region Runners Show Up Big at States

While Craanen was battling through his own personal war, other regional runners were laying it all out on the track. In Division 3, the Erie Mason boys showed up big, snagging 20th in the team standings. Coach Alison Meisner said they “raced very well,” even if they only hit one personal record from Porter Ravary, who landed 100th. Mason’s other runners included Caleb Healey (78th), David Mills (150th), Weston Albright (169th), Joseph Colaluca (188th), Carter Davis (245th), and Aiden Healey (250th). Whiteford’s Grant Rasor dropped five seconds off his personal best to finish 99th, and SMCC’s Phineas Totten came in at 149th.

Moving over to Division 2, New Boston Huron’s Cameron Crane delivered the Region’s top individual performance there, clocking a 16:05.7 for 37th place, just missing All-State by seven spots. Airport and Jefferson finished 25th and 27th, respectively, in the team standings for D2. The New Boston Huron girls also put in work, finishing 21st, with Zoey Cheney, Grace Pacheco, Alexis White, Kayla Christesen, Isa Vargo, Lauren Marcon, and Jennalynn Bronstein making up their squad. Individually, Claire Miller of Jefferson (97th), Ella Baker of Airport (101st), and Lana Benware of Ida (120th) were the top girls runners in D2.

And let’s not forget Division 1. Gibraltar Carlson’s Wyatt DelValle led the Region for the boys at 74th. Cameron Varner was 154th for Bedford, and Monroe’s Gavin Rohr took 182nd. For the D1 girls, Audrey Grosteffon (109th) and Iva Ravindra (220th) from Bedford, along with Ada Cain (226th) and Giada Fioritto (243rd) from Gibraltar Carlson, represented the Region.

It was a day packed with heart, grit, and some serious talent from across the Monroe County Region. Christian Craanen’s performance, fighting through that injury to secure All-State for the third time, just screams resilience. As a junior, he’s already built an incredible legacy, and you gotta wonder what he’s going to pull off next year, hopefully with a fully healed hip!
