Matteo Darmian, the former Manchester United defender, has officially signed with Bologna, bringing a serious resume to his new club. After being a free agent all summer, this move confirms a fresh chapter for the veteran defender and adds some serious experience to Bologna’s lineup.
Bologna Just Landed a Seriously Dependable Pro
This isn’t just another signing; Bologna FC 1909 locked Darmian down on a deal that runs until June 30, 2027, with an option to extend for an additional 12 months. The club’s statement on the acquisition is practically gushing, highlighting Darmian as a “versatile and dependable player.” He can operate in various roles out wide and even drop deeper when needed, making him a true asset. Born in 1989, Darmian’s experience shines through his game, marked by sound technique, elite positional awareness, and exceptional tactical discipline. He brings consistency, a sharp ability to read the game, and that crucial balance between his defensive duties and attacking contributions. Bologna just scooped up a proven talent.
That’s a Trophy Case Worth Talking About
And let’s talk about that resume, because it’s stacked. Before joining Bologna, Darmian parted ways with Inter Milan, where he made a massive 218 appearances across all competitions. During his time there, he was part of squads that bagged three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies, and three Supercoppa Italiana honors. Oh, and get this: he also reached the Champions League finals in both 2023 and 2025. Yeah, you read that right. Before Inter, he spent four seasons at Manchester United from 2015 to 2019, joining in a deal worth around £12.7 million from Torino. Under Louis van Gaal, he made over 90 appearances, even earning United’s Player of the Month award for August after his debut in a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the 2015/16 opener. While with United, he helped them clinch the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and the Europa League. This guy knows how to win trophies.
So, what’s next? Darmian is likely going to be available for selection this weekend when Bologna travels to Lecce. Bologna fans, you’re about to see a seriously experienced pro hit the pitch, and he’s ready to make an immediate impact for the club. Get hyped.
