Michigan State just dropped their fourth straight game of the 2026 season, losing a total heartbreaker to Illinois, 38-37 in overtime. Can you believe it came down to a two-point conversion they just couldn’t punch in? Brutal. It’s tough, especially when they battled back from being down a full 17 points, only to come up short.
Offense Went Absolutely Nuclear, For Real
Seriously, after that gut-wrenching overtime loss, you’d think the whole team was a mess. But hold up, the offense was straight-up balling out there! Led by quarterback Alessio Milivojevic and that running back, Jaziun Patterson, the Spartans’ offense absolutely went off. They put up a season-high in points and racked up 342 total yards. It’s a bittersweet pill to swallow, knowing the offense gave it their all and still couldn’t snag the win. But man, that comeback effort was wild to watch.
PFF Grades Are Telling a Different Story
So, Pro Football Focus dug into the film, and their grades for the Spartans’ offense tell a story that’s probably not getting enough attention. Check out these numbers for the top five offensive guys:
* QB Alessio Milivojevic – 86.9
* RB Jaziun Patterson – 78.9
* WR Bryson Williams – 73.8
* TE Jayden Savoury – 70.9
* WR Chrishon McCray – 68.0
Get this: all five of those top-graded players are skill position guys. That’s a first for the Spartans, and honestly, it’s a huge sign that some real development is happening on the offensive side of the ball. Even in a crushing loss, you gotta look at what’s building.
Next up, Michigan State is facing Northwestern in week seven. With the offense showing this kind of firepower and individual development, you have to be looking for them to keep that momentum rolling and finally grab a much-needed win.
