Kevin Durant, now rocking it with the Houston Rockets, has lit up social media yet again, this time going full clapback mode on Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia in a beef that just escalated the rivalry between their teams big time.
The Owner Throws Shade, KD Fires Back
This whole thing blew up after Ishbia did an interview on CNBC Sports’ podcast, reflecting on the Suns’ 2023 move to get Durant. An X account, fullcourtpass, pulled a quote from Ishbia where he basically said, “I kind of threw money at the problem…Bringing in super talented players like Kevin Durant doesn’t necessarily lead to championships.” Ouch. You know KD wasn’t gonna let that slide. Durant quote-tweeted the post and clapped back hard, saying, “#blameKD even though KD stayed on top of his game at 36 and got u back this “culture” you love so much. Aye, Matthew acts like I got arrested for a DUI or sumn. Back to threads.” He wasn’t wrong either, playing 36 games in the 2024-2025 season, averaging a killer 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. That 26.6 PPG? It was his second-highest scoring average over his last four seasons. Talk about still being on top of his game!
Ishbia Tries to Backtrack, Durant Delivers The Knockout
Ishbia tried to walk it back, responding directly to Durant with, “You obviously didn’t watch the clip. Didn’t blame you @kdtrey5, but am happy with the culture we are building here in Phoenix. We got the right guys and right focus now and are excited for this season. Good luck this season in Houston.” But KD wasn’t having it. He dropped the mic one last time, hitting Ishbia with, “U should be giving Thanks every chance u get. You don’t have to pay me an absurd amount of money to play for another team.” This isn’t just random beef; Durant was traded to Phoenix at the 2023 NBA trade deadline in a massive deal involving five players and five picks, then flipped to the Rockets ahead of the 2025 season in a seven-team monster trade. So yeah, there’s history here.
Get Ready for Fireworks
Mark your calendars, because Houston and Phoenix are squaring off three times this season, and after all this social media drama, these games are officially must-watch. First up is November 7, then November 25, and the series finale is set for February 5. You know these matchups are gonna be absolutely loaded with extra fire now.
