No. 3 Miami football clung to a 43-35 double overtime win Saturday evening, barely avoiding a complete meltdown against arch-rival Florida State after a Hail Mary touchdown was wiped off the board. It was a heart-stopping finish that saw the Hurricanes literally seconds from a massive upset loss.
The Play That Saved Miami’s Season
Seriously, you couldn’t write this drama. FSU was staring down a 4th-and-21 from Miami’s 36-yard line in double overtime, needing a miracle to keep the game alive. Quarterback Ashton Daniels launched a deep ball to the end zone, and wide receiver Micahi Danzy snagged it for what looked like an impossible touchdown. But just as the FSU sideline erupted, the flag came out: holding on FSU left tackle Xavier Chaplin. The penalty pushed FSU back 10 yards, giving Miami a second chance at escaping the jaws of defeat. Daniels had to heave it again. This time, wide receiver Duce Robinson and Miami defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald battled for the ball in the air. Officials ruled it an interception for Fitzgerald, and a quick review upheld the call, finally sealing the agonizing win for the Hurricanes. Talk about getting out of jail free.
Malachi Toney’s Heisman Campaign Just Got Louder
Amidst all that chaos, Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney put on an absolute clinic, proving exactly why he’s one of the best players in the country and a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. The guy was everywhere for the No. 3 Hurricanes. He racked up 11 receptions for a staggering 154 yards and hauled in two touchdowns. But he wasn’t done! Toney also ran for 31 yards on two carries, and then, just to put a cherry on top, he even threw a pass for a two-point conversion to Cooper Barkate, giving Miami that crucial 43-35 lead in double OT. What a performance when his team needed him most.
Miami might have gotten a scare, but they walked away with the win. With Toney playing at this absurd level, you have to wonder how far he can carry this team, and how many more highlight reels he’ll produce as his Heisman push keeps rolling.
