Keldon Johnson, the 2026 NBA Sixth Man of the Year, just put up a season-high 14 points in the Spurs’ dominant 130-103 win over Sacramento, and here’s the kicker: he did it a week after suffering a gnarly, deep cut inside his right cheek that needed three stitches to close up. Yeah, you read that right. Three stitches. This dude is built different.
Playing Through the Pain
The gash wasn’t some minor scratch, either. Johnson caught it hard in a collision with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander during the season-opening loss to Oklahoma City. That’s a rough way to start the year, right? And it wasn’t just a surface wound; doctors had to put in three stitches to close it up. “It was pretty painful, but we made it work,” Johnson said. You gotta respect that grit. He added that the Spurs’ medical staff took care of him, even getting him smoothies so he could actually eat without messing with the stitches. Despite the discomfort, Johnson still racked up 4 rebounds in his 22 minutes on the court Tuesday night. That’s a full stat line from a guy who probably had trouble smiling, let alone talking.
More Than Just Buckets: The “Loudest One Out Here”
What’s even crazier? His teammates say the mouth laceration hasn’t shut him up one bit. This is Keldon Johnson we’re talking about, the guy known for his trademark non-stop chatter. Devin Vassell summed it up perfectly: “I love KJ. He’s still KJ no matter what. If he has broken ribs, broken bones, it don’t matter. He’s still the loudest one out here.” That tells you everything you need to know about the guy’s spirit. And it’s not just on the court; Johnson shook off the pain to do some community work this week too, hitting up the RBFCU Spurs Youth Basketball League Clinic at CentroMed Health & Wellness Clinic on Monday. “You got to love it,” Vassell added, and honestly, who wouldn’t?
It’s clear Johnson isn’t letting anything slow him down, stitches or not. That kind of heart and relentless energy is infectious. It’s the kind of leadership that builds something special, and you can bet the Spurs are leaning into it hard. We’ll be watching to see how this incredible resolve continues to power him through the season.
