The Golden State Valkyries are one game away from a WNBA title after a gritty 64-55 victory over the Atlanta Dream in Game 5 of the Finals on Monday, giving them a commanding 3-2 series lead. This wasn’t just a win, it was a statement game that pushes the Dream to the absolute edge.
Valkyries Lock Down Dream in Defensive Battle
The Valkyries didn’t just win, they absolutely suffocated the Dream in what was clearly another defensive struggle. Veronica Burton and Kiah Stokes were absolute monsters for Golden State, each dropping 13 points and grabbing eight boards. And get this: they combined for seven blocks! That’s just suffocating defense in a Finals game. The Valkyries defense made sure every bucket was earned.
On the other side, Rhyne Howard tried to carry the Dream, putting up a game-high 20 points. But it wasn’t enough, especially with Angel Reese and her fellow stars collectively struggling big time, shooting a combined 6-of-20 for 17 points. You can’t expect to win a Finals game when your key players are shooting like that. Golden State just dug in and made life miserable for the Dream’s offense.
One Win Away From the Trophy
Even Hollywood royalty was in the house for this one! Two-time Emmy winner Zendaya, an Oakland native, was courtside at Chase Center, rooting on her hometown Valkyries. She even got the VIP treatment, visiting the locker room after the win. When Zendaya’s showing up to celebrate with you, you know it’s a big deal.
Now, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The Valkyries head to Atlanta with a chance to clinch the title in Game 6 on Thursday. They are just one victory away from hoisting that trophy in State Farm Arena. Can they close it out on the road, or will the Dream manage to push it to a Game 7? All eyes are now on Thursday in Atlanta. You don’t want to miss Game 6, this is what championship basketball is all about!
