Trey Kaufman-Renn, a player the Minnesota Timberwolves just snagged in the 2026 NBA draft, has officially committed to play college ball at Kansas for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Talk about a curveball!
Rock Chalk Jayhawk, Baby!
Kansas announced this massive signing on Monday, and head coach Bill Self wasted no time hyping up his new big man. Self confirmed Kaufman-Renn, a former Purdue star, is already enrolled in classes and hit the practice court this past Sunday. This dude’s got some serious credentials, making it to the national championship game, the Elite Eight, and the Sweet 16 during his time at Purdue. Coach Self is already saying that Trey’s “basketball IQ” means his transition to the Jayhawks is gonna be quicker than most, even though he’s joining late in the process. He’s “extremely well-drilled and well-coached,” according to Self, and that kind of praise from a coach like Self means business.
NBA Draft Drama and a Legal Loophole
So, how does a guy drafted into the NBA end up back in college? This is where it gets wild. Kaufman-Renn was a second-round pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2026 NBA draft. But here’s the kicker: he actually won a preliminary injunction earlier this month. That legal maneuver is precisely what opened the door for him to receive one more year of college eligibility. It’s a truly unexpected turn of events for a player who, just weeks ago, was on track to head to the pros.
With his eligibility locked in and Kansas already hyping him up, Trey Kaufman-Renn is about to make a huge impact in college basketball for one more season. It’ll be fascinating to watch how he elevates the Jayhawks this year, especially after getting drafted. He’s got everything to prove, and you know he’s going to bring that fire.
