Ben Simmons’ torn Achilles injury has already hit the NBA hard, a major blow as opening night for the 2026-27 season approaches. It’s just one of the massive questions hanging over the league right now, a sentiment Kevin O’Connor and Grant Liffmann explored in their latest breakdown. This isn’t just about one player though, the whole league is facing some serious drama right from the jump.
Early Season Shocks and Major Moves
Before the ball even drops for real, we’re already seeing some significant developments. Beyond Simmons’ devastating Achilles tear, Franz Wagner is also dealing with a right shoulder injury. Man, you just hate to see those key guys go down so early. On the flip side, Oklahoma City made a smart move, locking down Cason Wallace with a new contract, which is a big deal for their future. It’s these kinds of early season updates that can totally shift the landscape of the league.
Big Questions Loom for the 2026-27 Season
As we get ready for tip-off, the league is swirling with talk about what’s coming next. O’Connor and Liffmann dove deep into it, from the brutal Eastern Conference playoff race where some teams are absolutely going to get squeezed out, to which teams are just plain confusing everyone. They debated which coach is under the most pressure right now, and whether the Knicks’ contract situation is going to blow up in their face. Seriously, seeing Karl-Anthony Towns chatting with Josh Hart of the Knicks last April during a playoff game from the previous season, it reminds you how quickly things can change and how much is always on the line.
The discussion didn’t stop there. They looked at which star players are truly feeling the heat this season, and which franchises are most likely to just blow up their entire core before it’s all over. Everyone’s wondering which preseason developments are actually for real and which will fade away fast. And the big one: who’s going to emerge as a future All-Star? By April, will the majority of fans and analysts even consider Wemby the best player in the world? Plus, there’s always the early NBA Finals predictions flying around, and we’re all looking forward to seeing what opinions get walked back by Christmas.
This season is about to kick off, and with these huge questions hanging in the air, you know it’s going to be a wild ride from the first buzzer. Get ready!
