Carmelo Anthony just dropped a bombshell, straight up declaring Philadelphia 76ers’ wing Jaylen Brown the “best two-way player in the NBA.” Yeah, you read that right. Melo made this massive claim on his “7PM in Brooklyn podcast” this week, setting a wild bar for Brown as he gears up for his debut season with the 76ers.
Melo’s Unfiltered Praise
Anthony didn’t just say it and walk away, he doubled down, digging into why he believes Brown stands alone. Melo said if Victor Wembanyama wasn’t even in the league, Brown “could win Defensive Player of the Year.” Think about that for a second. That means, according to Melo, Brown’s defense is “elite,” and his offense? That’s “elite” too. This isn’t just a casual shoutout. Anthony pointed to Brown’s resume, noting he was “NBA Finals MVP” and was deep “in MVP conversations last year as an offensive player.” That’s high praise, putting Brown on a whole different level from where some fans might typically place him.
The Defense Question: Is Melo Right?
Now, let’s be real. Brown is absolutely considered a good defender, no doubt. But “elite” in that way? He’s definitely “not often talked about as elite,” especially since he’s never once been named to an All-Defensive Team. It’s fair to say his “former defensive prowess has taken a back seat to the offensive load he’s carried” over the years. But that’s exactly why Melo’s comments hit different for his upcoming 76ers season. In Philadelphia, with shots needing to be spread around, Brown’s defense is going to be an absolutely “important secondary skill.” Anthony obviously believes he’s completely “up to the task.”
So, heading into his first season with the 76ers, every possession Brown plays on defense is going to be under the microscope. Carmelo Anthony has thrown down a serious challenge, and you know Brown will be looking to prove him right. Keep an eye on his defensive effort; it could be the key to his impact in Philly.
