Mercedes Moné cemented her reign as AEW Women’s World Champion Saturday night, taking down Thekla at WrestleDream and keeping that title around her waist. It was a brutal fight, and Moné absolutely proved why she’s called The CEO.
The WrestleDream Gauntlet
This wasn’t just a regular title defense, right? Moné had to pull out all the stops to keep the gold. Near the end of the match, things got absolutely wild when Moné used her mask to attack Thekla. You don’t see that every day!
She tried to put Thekla away with the Mone Maker, but Thekla was ready for it and countered, rolling up Moné for a pin attempt. For a second there, everyone held their breath. But The CEO simply couldn’t be held down for long. She evaded Thekla’s attempt to hit the Blackout and then, BAM, countered with her own Moné Maker for the win. What a finish, ending a seriously intense matchup!
The Road The CEO Paved Back To The Gold
You gotta remember the journey Moné’s been on to get back to this point. She only became AEW women’s world champion for the first time in August at All In, beating Willow Nightingale in a physical bout that left her with a broken nose. That injury kept her out of action for an entire month, forcing her to miss All Out.
That’s where Thekla stepped up, beating Nightingale in a No. 1 contender’s match. That win was big for Thekla too, as she got some retribution on Willow, who had ended her own 165-day reign as champ. Moné’s return to action on the September 30th episode of Dynamite, which paid tribute to Pac, was a little rough; she lost in a six-woman tag team match alongside Marina Shafir, Thunder Rosa, and Hyan.
But Moné bounced back quick! She beat Queen Aminata to retain the AEW women’s world title on the October 6th Grand Slam France edition of Dynamite, locking in her spot on the WrestleDream card. Fans had been waiting for Moné vs. Thekla for a bit, especially after Willow’s title win threw a wrench into earlier predictions, but Saturday night, they absolutely delivered.
Moné’s back, she’s healthy, and she’s proving why she’s The CEO. With Thekla in the rearview, who’s got the guts to step up next and challenge the champ? This title reign is only getting started!
