New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown flat out declined to say whether he actually received his NBA championship ring when reporters caught up with him on Friday. This all went down before the team’s matchup against the Boston Celtics, and man, it just amplified all the weird vibes from Tuesday night’s ring ceremony.
Empty Boxes at MSG: What’s Going On?
It turns out Brown’s silence isn’t the only thing raising eyebrows. Joe Vardon of The Athletic dropped a report Thursday confirming what many were suspecting: the assistant coaches didn’t get their championship rings during the big ceremony at Madison Square Garden. This was supposed to be the moment for the 2025-26 NBA title winners to finally get their hardware, but for some key members of the staff, it was a no-go.
Brown and his assistant coaches were indeed honored, and they even received ring boxes. But here’s the kicker: Vardon reported that the assistant coaches’ boxes were empty. Seriously, empty. Apparently, they were told earlier on Tuesday that they wouldn’t be getting their rings that night, and they hadn’t even been fitted for them yet. Vardon added that those empty ring boxes were a “late addition to the ceremony.” You gotta wonder what kind of last-minute scramble led to *that* decision.
Brown’s Ring Status Still a Mystery
As for Coach Brown himself, The Athletic got conflicting information about whether he received his ring on Tuesday. They couldn’t even verify if he actually got one. So, you have a head coach who won’t confirm if he has his ring, and assistant coaches who definitely didn’t get theirs and were handed empty boxes. It’s not exactly the picture of a smooth championship celebration.
This whole situation is still developing, with more information and analysis promised soon. You know everyone’s gonna be watching to see how this plays out.
