Carbon’s boys cross country team just snagged the Region 13 championship, but that’s only half the story as the 3A region championships wrapped up this past week. We saw some incredible runs, dominant team performances, and folks, the 3A state tournament on Oct. 27 in Salt Lake City is shaping up to be absolutely wild.

Ogden Crushes Region 12 With a Double Championship

Seriously, you gotta talk about Ogden High. At the Weber County Fairgrounds for the Region 12 championships, they absolutely annihilated the competition in *both* the girls’ and boys’ divisions. Their girls’ team scored a ridiculously low 27 points, with Morgan coming in second at 48. On the individual side, Avery Barton, a senior from Ogden, led the charge with a blazing 17:55.9. Her teammate Clara Geddes wasn’t far behind with a 19:11.3. Ogden had so many girls in the top 10, it wasn’t even fair, including freshman Lucia Bute, junior Ally Stark, and senior Georgia Smith. They’re looking unstoppable heading into state.

The Ogden boys were no different, also scoring a dominant 27 points to Grantsville’s 51. Senior Daniel Ekstrom from Ogden took the individual win at 16:15.1, followed by Grantsville’s Cooper Clark at 16:26.4. Ogden junior Ryker Nicholas rounded out the top three at 16:29.2. Just like the girls, the Ogden boys showed insane depth with Josh Nielson, Boone Burton, and Andrew Francis all tearing it up in the top ten. When you see a team win both sides of a region like that, you know they’re coming for the state title.

Carbon Boys and Union Girls Secure Region 13 Titles

Over at the Roosevelt Golf Course for the Region 13 championships, we saw some fierce competition too. Carbon’s boys came out on top with a solid 29 points, beating Manti who had 39. Manti senior Paul Gardner absolutely flew, clocking an incredible 15:30.4 for the individual win. Manti’s Mason Carlile came in second at 16:22.7. For Carbon, it was junior Carter Jenson leading the way with a 16:37.0, followed by senior Matthew Stromness at 16:46.1. Union’s Cooper Duncan also put in work at 16:50.2. Looks like Carbon’s depth paid off big time for that team title.

On the girls’ side of Region 13, Union’s team took home the championship with 37 points, edging out Carbon with 47. Emery senior Gentry Christiansen was the fastest individual runner at 18:35.2. Union had junior Kaylee Nielsen take second at 19:11.5, with freshman Mallory Winterton also from Union landing in third with 19:40.7. It was a tight battle, but Union showed up when it counted. We also heard Canyon View’s girls won the Region 14 championship, which is awesome for them!

With these regional battles done, the stakes are officially through the roof. The 3A state tournament is going down on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City. Who’s gonna bring that championship glory home? You know we’ll be watching every step of the way.
