The Seattle Seahawks might’ve taken a 19-16 preseason L against the Tennessee Titans, but don’t let that final score fool ya, 12s. The first half was a whole different story, with our backups and deep reserves absolutely putting on a show against Tennessee’s starting defense. We saw some real fireworks, but then the second half? Ehhhhhh. And tragically, the game kicked off with a brutal injury that’s a significant blow to our safety depth, just when we started feeling good.
Offensive Explosions and Bounce-Back QBs
Our offense, especially in that first half, looked way sharper than last week’s opener. Elijah Arroyo continued his strong camp and preseason, looking like the guy we hoped for last year. On the game’s opening drive, he hauled in a play-action pass for a sizable gain on 3rd and 1. Then, he absolutely torched Tennessee’s starting defense for a 36-yard touchdown grab, thanks in part to a blown coverage. Coach Brian Fleury is definitely helping unlock his potential, and it’s exciting to watch!
Then there’s Jacardia Wright. After missing almost all of last season on the practice squad due to injury, and a decent chunk of training camp with another, he came back with a bang. He dashed through a gaping hole for a 69-yard touchdown run against Tennessee’s starting defense. Straight to the end zone! Not everything was perfect for Wright, though. He had a brutal pass protection mix-up that led to a Drew Lock interception (thankfully negated by penalty), and he botched a 3rd and 9 conversion by trying to juke a tackler instead of getting upfield. Still, that run was electric. Drew Lock himself had a much better outing, too. After some wayward accuracy last week, he was on point against the Titans, going 12/14 for 103 yards and a touchdown. Even with that poor decision that led to the negated pick, his performance secures his QB2 spot over Jalen Milroe, no doubt.
Pass Rush Pop and a Crushing Injury
Our pass rush depth has been a worry, especially at the bottom of the roster, but Connor O’Toole brought the juice against the Titans. This guy had such a good summer as a rookie that he wasn’t even exposed to waivers. He was excellent, recording a sack and a key third-down stop. We needed that kind of energy.
But man, the biggest gut punch of the game was the early injury to second-round rookie Bud Clark. That’s a significant blow to Seattle’s safety depth, and it just sucks to see a young guy go down like that. It puts a real damper on what was, at times, a really encouraging performance.
This preseason game was a rollercoaster, showing us flashes of brilliance and gut-punching reality. With roster spots on the line, every snap matters, and while we saw some legit contenders emerge, that Bud Clark injury stings hard. We gotta see how the team responds and who steps up next.
