Somersworth High School volleyball is absolutely rolling, sweeping Gilford 3-0 on Wednesday to push their season record to a perfect 11-0 in Division II. The Hilltoppers won by scores of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-23, showing serious grit even in that final, tighter set. Talk about a squad delivering on every front.
Hilltoppers Dominance and Other Court Battles
Emily Runions was straight up a force for Somersworth, dropping 16 kills and snagging 13 digs. That’s a double-double that tells you everything about her impact. Paige Demers was right there with her, adding 11 kills and shutting down six blocks. And you can’t forget Kylie Pettengill dishing out a phenomenal 28 assists. This team is flat out dominant, and they are making a statement with every single match.
Elsewhere on the court, things got wild. Concord managed to take down Winnacunnet 3-1, though Winnacunnet’s Emily Pitfick put up a valiant fight with 27 assists, five digs, and two aces in the loss. Mia Botnick added six kills and two aces, with Nadia Johnson grabbing seven digs and three aces. Pinkerton Academy swept Dover 3-0, a tough result for Dover who now sits at 6-7. Grace Kelly had seven kills for Dover and Lottie Olkkola added four, but it wasn’t enough. Then there was Berwick Academy in a five-set thriller, beating Bancroft School 3-2. Megan Libby was a beast for Berwick with 26 assists, five aces, eight digs, and two kills. Piper Clews chipped in 10 kills and two blocks, and Corinne Besette had seven aces, seven kills, and seven digs. What a marathon!
Pitch Power and Defensive Grinds
Over on the soccer pitch, we saw some tight contests. Portsmouth Christian Academy battled Newmarket to a 1-1 tie in Division IV. Connor Graham got the goal for PCA, and Jackson Malone was a brick wall in net, recording nine saves. Another shutout battle saw Marshwood and Deering play to a 0-0 draw. Marshwood’s goalkeeper, Jack Deschene, was working overtime, making 10 saves to keep his team in it.
Field hockey also brought the defensive highlights. Bonny Eagle got the 2-0 win over Marshwood, but Marshwood goalie Makayle Coy had to be incredible, tallying 16 saves in the loss. Ella Karlis and Haley Labrie each found the back of the net for Bonny Eagle. That’s a lot of action with some serious defensive showcases.
Cross Country Crews Bring the Heat
The Berwick Academy cross country teams were out there grinding in a quad-meet. The boys team showed out, taking team victories over both Beaver Country Day and Pingree. Mikhail El-Badry finished second overall with a time of 17 minutes, 43 seconds, with Henry Hudson right behind him in third at 19:26, and Benjamin McGowan in fourth at 19:29. Talk about a strong showing at the top!
The girls side also had some fantastic individual performances, beating Beaver Country Day and Dana Hall. Mia Leveille led the Bulldogs with a second-place finish in 23:39, while Gracie Smith took third in 23:47, and Tiffanie Groth came in fourth at 24:02. They did drop the meet to Pingree, but those individual times are something to build on.
What’s next for these teams? Somersworth has to keep that perfect run going. Dover’s got work to do at 6-7 to get back above .500. The cross country teams are looking to build on those strong individual finishes and keep pushing themselves. It’s still early in the season, and there’s plenty of action left to see!
