Thibaut Courtois is officially OUT of El Clasico against Barcelona tonight, a massive blow confirmed after a chaotic morning that saw conflicting reports about his availability. It’s a tough pill to swallow for Real Madrid, with their star keeper definitively ruled out of the biggest match on the calendar.
The Courtois Saga: From Hope to Heartbreak
What a wild ride it was earlier today. Real Madrid originally announced that Courtois wouldn’t be traveling to Barcelona due to a viral infection, confirming he wouldn’t play in El Clasico. But then, the player himself was reportedly ready to do absolutely everything to get back to full fitness for a late flight, which left the door ajar. His presence wasn’t fully ruled out at that point, despite the club’s initial statement. You could almost feel the tension in Valdebebas.
Sources were painting a pretty graphic picture, with some saying Courtois had a “bad case of the flu” and was “completely wiped out.” Yet, the club, according to MARCA, kept hope alive, citing sources claiming, “We’ll see how things progress in the coming hours and if he feels better. If so, he’ll fly to Barcelona.” Courtois, to his credit, just refused to give up, determined to exhaust every single possibility before he accepted defeat. Talk about a warrior’s spirit!
Lunin Steps Up for the Grandest Stage
Ultimately, though, the saga is officially over. A recent report from Mundo Deportivo confirmed Courtois is definitively ruled out of the Clasico. The viral infection simply proved too much to overcome in time, and no late improvement arrived. The Belgian will not fly to Barcelona and misses the trip to the Camp Nou altogether. It brings an end to a morning filled with conflicting versions and dashed hopes.
With Courtois sidelined, all eyes will now turn to Andriy Lunin, who is set to deputize between the posts on the grandest stage of all. Real Madrid is confident in their backup, but let’s be real, Lunin hasn’t exactly had a great time against Barcelona lately, even if his overall record isn’t so bad. Can he rise to the occasion and hold the line for Real Madrid? It’s going to be a massive test for him, and for the entire squad.
